Sermon Notes - Joshua 6 - Littleby Baptist Church - September 14, 2025

1.        We have continued to see God at work with Joshua.

a.        He encouraged him.

b.       He helped the people cross the Jordan.

c.        He guided them to build a memorial, a reminder.

d.       To help them remember what God has done for them.

2.        We have also seen the people of Canann, lose heart.

a.        They knew their days were numbered.

b.       They knew that God was going to give their land to the Israelites.

c.        It was a reminder that God is at work in all of us.

d.       We never know when He will open the door for someone to accept the Good News we share.

e.        We must always be ready to share.

3.        Chapter five was a great reminder that we need to trust in God’s timing.

a.        It is always perfect.

b.       He brings us to the perfect spot.

c.        At the perfect time.

d.       He knows when we need to be somewhere.

e.        So that we can do what He needs us to do.

f.          Or so that we can be blessed by another.

g.        He also works in our lives at certain times and in certain ways to grow our faith.

h.        Hebrews 12:2 says Jesus is the author and perfector of our faith.

i.          He knows what we need.

j.          He knows when we need it.

k.        If we can trust in Him.

l.          Knowing that He will give us what we need, when we need it.

m.     The results are amazing.

n.        Might even say they are life changing.

4.        As we pick up today in chapter 6.

a.        Joshua is standing with the Lord.

b.       The Commander of the Lord’s Army has His sword drawn.

c.        Joshua has removed his sandals as he is on holy ground.

d.       He is bowing face down.

e.        As they look towards Jericho.

5.        Joshua 6:1

a.        Jericho was a walled city.

b.       When the gates were down, it was sealed.

c.        The people of Jericho knew that the Israelites had crossed the Jordan River.

d.       They had some time to prepare.

e.        They pulled in everything they could.

f.          They sealed up every opening.

g.        Jericho was locked up tighter than normal.

h.        They believed that the God of the Israelites was going to give their land to them.

i.          But they were not willing to make it easy.

6.        Joshua 6:2

a.        God is giving it all to Joshau and the people.

b.       Joshua and the Israelites are not taking it.

c.        Let’s be clear, God giving it to them.

d.       They will need to trust in God.

e.        They will need to believe in Him.

f.          They will need to follow what He tells them to do.

7.        Joshua 6:3-5

a.        Here we see God give Joshua the plan.

b.       Not a normal battle plan.

c.        Might have led Joshua to scratch his head a bit.

d.       But God has not let him down yet.

e.        I could imagine him thinking just that.

f.          God has taken us this far, let’s give this a go.

8.        Something for us to remember.

a.        If we truly believe that we are saved by what our Jesus has done.

b.       If we believe that our God has paid for our sins.

c.        That we will spend forever with Him.

d.       Then when Scripture tells us something.

e.        Or if we know that we are to do something.

f.          Or we are feeling led in a certain way.

g.        Even if it does not make perfect sense.

h.        We need to trust that the God that has provided for our salvation for all eternity.

i.          Will provide for whatever we are dealing with.

j.          We need to step out in faith.

k.        Taking that risk.

l.          Trusting that God will help us accomplish what He has called us to do.

m.     We need to have faith and trust our God.

9.        Joshua 6:6-7

a.        Joshua is doing just that.

b.       He is following God’s unusual battle plan.

c.        The Ark and the men are sent out.

10.   Joshua 6:8-14

a.        Day by day by day.

b.       Joshua had the people do what God had ordered.

c.        He was stepping out in faith.

d.       Trusting what God had told him to do.

11.   For 6 days it might be easy to do what God tells us to do.

a.        It gets harder with time.

b.       But that is exactly what we are told to do.

c.        The struggle we have is life gets in the way.

d.       We are supposed to be witnesses to the people in our lives.

e.        Yet, many Christ followers do not share Jesus with others.

f.          Many don’t even talk about being a Christ follower.

g.        We have to get better at that.

h.        We are commanded to Love Others.

i.          Yet, many Christians don’t notice the needs of others so that we can help them.

j.          When the excitement is high.

k.        When we first turn to Christ.

l.          It is easy, for a short period of time.

m.     As time goes on, we get distracted.

12.   As Christ followers our faithfulness needs to stand the test of time.

a.        We need to be witnesses regularly.

b.       We need to look to those in need and help as we can.

c.        These things should be a way of life for us.

d.       Not because they save us.

e.        Because these are ways that the love our Lord has given us manifests as we live to Love Him and Love Others.

13.   Joshua 6:15-16

a.        It is the seventh day.

b.       Now march around the city seven times.

14.   I wonder if the people of Jericho at first thought, here they go again.

a.        Nothing to see here.

b.       And then the Israelites did not stop.

c.        I bet a bit of a frenzy started.

d.       The Israelites kept walking.

e.        Not just one lap.

f.          Not just two laps.

g.        Then they hit seven laps.

h.        The suspense would have been high.

i.          God is delivering them into their hands.

j.          Joshua wanted to make sure they understood.

k.        This is a gift from God.

l.          Not of their own making.

m.     God is judging the Canaanites, and the Israelites are receiving the blessing.

15.   There is some important information here.

16.   Joshua 6:17-19

a.        An emphasis is dropped here to remind the people to Spare Rahab and her family as was committed.

b.       Things made of silver, gold, bronze, and iron were to be set aside for God.

c.        Everything else was to be destroyed.

d.       Jericho is the first fruit of the Promised land.

e.        It is a sacrifice to God.

f.          A few people are to be saved.

g.        Certain things are to go into the Lord’s treasury.

h.        The balance is to be burned.

17.   The commands are clear.

a.        It will be a sin to not follow them.

b.       No different than if we were to reject the gift we have been given from our God.

c.        Ignoring the Good News that is offered.

d.       Something we do not want to do.

18.   Joshua 6:20-21

a.        Hebrews 11:30

b.       A great fortified walled city.

c.       Fell with a shout, NO!

d.       That is probably something we have been told before.

e.       It Fell because God was faithful!

f.          It fell because God handed over the land to Joshua and the people as He had promised many years earlier.

g.        God is faithful.

h.        Joshua and the people trusted in God.

i.          They followed God’s Plan.

j.          And it worked.

k.        That can be hard for us to do.

l.          But when we follow God’s Plan.

m.     It does tend to work better for us than when we venture out on our own.

19.   Joshua 6:22-25

a.        A promise kept.

b.       Joshua honored the commitment the men made.

c.        Rahab and her family lived among the Israelites for an extended period of time.

20.   Jericho was sacrificed.

a.        It was burnt to the ground.

b.       The items that were to be kept, the silver, gold, bronze, and iron were added to the Lord’s treasury.

c.        Everything else was to be destroyed.

21.   Joshua 6:26

a.        Jericho was sacrificed by God.

b.       It was destroyed.

c.        The intent was for it never to be rebuilt.

d.       Which it hasn’t in that form.

22.   Joshua 6:27

a.        God told Joshua that He would be with him.

b.       He told Joshua that He would never leave him or forsake him.

c.        Here we are at the end of the sixth chapter and have seen some amazing things.

d.       And what God has said has all been true.

23.   It should remind us that we can trust in our God.

a.        For our God is faithful.

b.       The thing is, He is faithful even if it does not seem reasonable.

c.        Even if it may sound flat out crazy.

d.       Our God does not always ask us, call us, or tell us to do things that we can accomplish on our own.

e.        More often than not, He wants us to do things we cannot do on our own.

f.          Could Joshua and the soldiers cause the walls to fall on their own by yelling at them?

g.        No, they needed God to deliver the land to them.

h.        They needed to trust that a faithful God was going to what He had promised.

24.   There are a lot of things in our lives that require us to have faith.

a.        Many require us to be stretched beyond our capabilities.

b.       To do things that we cannot do on our own.

c.        It requires us to trust in God.

d.       To have faith.

e.        To know that He’s Got This.

f.          Whatever this is.

25.   I don’t know what your This is, but God does.

a.        Your this may be stepping out in a new way to serve others, trust in God and let Him pave the way.

b.       Your this may be overcoming a medical challenge or some other challenge, know that God is with you always as you walk through it.

c.        Your this may be taking that first step to repent of your sins and put your faith in Christ.

d.       Please know if that is your, Jesus has already paid the price and wants to spend forever with you.

e.        Whatever your this is… Jesus loves you.

f.          He wants to help you.

g.        If you would like to talk or pray.

h.        Know that I am here.
