Sermon Notes - Build a Foundation, Biblically based teaching - Rising Sun Baptist Church - April 26, 2026
1. This week we are continuing to lay our foundation for doing life together.
a.
Hopefully for
years to come.
2.
Last week we
talked about praying dependently to our God.
a.
I hope you took
some time this last week to reflect on your prayers.
b.
Asking God to
show you if you need to pray differently.
c.
To pray for
something new.
d.
Or pray for
things well beyond your abilities.
3.
The next piece of
our foundation is critical.
a.
Without it
churches have gone astray.
b.
In the world
today, people have lost sight of God.
c.
Sadly, Scripture
tells us it is a sign of the times we live in.
d.
There will be some
who speak The Truth and others who tickle ears.
4.
There are times
and places for things such as Ted Talks.
a.
That shares
research and knowledge to hopefully inspire others.
5.
There is a time
and place for self-help type of messages.
6.
Sometimes church
teachings can fit in those categories.
7.
But if we flip
through our Bibles and read more than those verses we enjoy reading we will see
there are a lot of hard truths.
a.
There are times
we will be inspired.
b.
But there are
also times we are corrected and challenged.
c.
There are times where
we will be lifted up, maybe feel like a self-help type of thing.
d.
But there are
also times where the hard truths remind us that we are flawed humans.
8.
Bible Based
Teaching is a key element of our foundation.
a.
Cracking open our
Bibles and reading them is something we need to prioritize.
b.
The New Testament
with the teachings of Jesus and His followers.
c.
The Old Testament
with all the prophecies.
d.
With the history
that shows us our God is faithful and so much more.
9.
Our foundation
that symbolizes the beginning of us doing life together…
a.
Cannot be built
without Bible Based Teaching.
10. As part of our foundation, it needs to be central in sermons,
Sunday school lessons, and both of our evening services.
a.
If you haven’t heard,
we are switching up our Wednesday night studies.
b.
We will start
with praying over our prayer list.
c.
And then be
digging into the Word.
d.
Week by week
growing in our knowledge of Scripture and how to apply it to our lives.
e.
The first
Wednesday of May, we will be starting in the Gospel of John.
f.
It is one way to
strengthen our foundation.
11. Psalms 25:1-3
a.
David is talking
about how he is looking for the Lord’s guidance.
b.
Waiting and
trusting in God.
12. Psalms 25:4-5
a.
The Bible is how
God makes His Word known to us.
b.
It is how we
learn His ways.
c.
His path for us.
d.
His truth.
e.
It is how He
teaches us.
13. Joshua 1:8
a.
We are to
meditate on the book of instruction, the Word of God.
b.
The teachings
here at RSBC need to be Biblically based.
c.
But it does go
beyond that.
d.
We need to
personally spend time in the Word.
14. 2 Timothy 1:13-14
a.
We are to hold on
to the ‘pattern’.
b.
A pattern is not
a once and done thing.
c.
It is a regular
practice, a habit, a discipline, of sound teaching.
d.
As followers of
Christ… we need those examples.
e.
Which is one of
the reasons why it is important to be a part of a church that has sound Bible
based teaching.
f.
Which is why it
is a key element of our foundation of building our lives together.
15. Bible based teaching helps each one of us develop the
discipline of dividing God’s Word correctly.
a.
It gives us a pattern
to learn from.
b.
A pattern to
model as we grow and ultimately end up teaching others.
16. 2 Timothy 3:14-15
a.
Timothy was to
continue in what he had learned.
b.
To hold on to the
truths he believed in that were found in Scripture.
c.
Paul went on to
emphasize that it was the sacred Scriptures.
d.
Which for him
were the OT Scriptures.
e.
Which helped
Timothy have the wisdom he needed to see Jesus for who He is.
17. A foundation of biblical based teaching helps us to
see God for who He is.
a.
Helps us to learn
to trust in our Lord and Savior.
18. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
a.
Some versions
translate the first part of this as Scripture being ‘God breathed’.
b.
Either way you
translate it, Scripture comes directly from God.
c.
Man may have been
the tool to write it.
d.
But it was given
by the Holy Spirit.
e.
Scripture is
God’s Word.
f.
As such, it needs
to be a key part of our lives as followers of Jesus.
19. Paul included several things that it is good for,
teaching, rebuking, correcting, training, so that we may be complete and
equipped to do God’s work.
a.
Hearing and being
taught God’s Word are critical for our spiritual health.
b.
For our growth.
c.
For our
sanctification process.
d.
Where we are
transformed by God from the person we were to who He wants us to be.
e.
As believers we
depend on the Word of God.
f.
Which is why it
is a critical element of our foundation.
20. 2 Timothy 4:1
a.
Paul is laying
out a charge to Timothy.
b.
A charge that is
true for anyone who teaches the Word of God.
c.
This is something
that is for each of us whether we teach in a formal situation such as a church
or informal such as at home to our kids or grandkids.
21. 2 Timothy 4:2
a.
Whenever we
teach, the Word of God is to be the focus.
b.
We need to be
ready to share the Word of God at any time.
c.
Whether we feel
like it or not.
d.
Even when it may
not be convenient.
e.
Preaching the
Word is something that is to be the priority at any time.
22. People need to hear Biblical Truth.
a.
This is a charge
to any who stand in the pulpit or who teaches the Bible to another person.
b.
Teach the Bible.
c.
Teach it to
rebuke, correct, and encourage.
d.
Have patience as
you teach it, remembering that people are at different places in the
sanctification process.
e.
The point that
strikes true to you today, may not be the one that challenges the person you
are sharing with.
23. 2 Timothy 4:3-4
a.
This is one of
the reasons why Biblically based teaching has to be part of our foundation.
b.
A time is coming,
and maybe already here, when people will no longer listen.
c.
Biblically based
teaching is needed so that each of us are equipped to reach those who will
still listen.
d.
It is needed to
touch the lives of those who can still hear the Truth.
e.
Bible based
teaching is essential for the day we live in.
24. 2 Timothy 2:15
a.
Paul’s message to
Timothy to do his best applies to each of us.
b.
Teaching the Word
of God is an important task.
c.
One that is not
to be taken lightly.
d.
If we work to
correctly divide the Word of God, to understand what it is telling us.
e.
Then we share it
with others, there is no reason to be ashamed.
f.
Those who
approach it haphazardly or twist it to convey their own message, will face a
time when they will hang their head in shame.
g.
Treat the Word of
God as it should be and hold your head high.
h.
Purposefully
distort it and face God.
25. John 14:6
a.
The Bible is our
copy of the Truth.
b.
The Truth that
points to our Jesus.
c.
When we focus on
teaching the Word, the Truth, we are focusing on Jesus.
26. John 8:31-32
a.
If you continue
in my Word.
b.
Those teaching as
well as those learning.
c.
If we continue in
His Word, we are His disciples….
d.
If we are in the
Word, building our foundation.
e.
We are Christ
Followers.
f.
We need God’s
Word taught to help us grow.
g.
We need to study
God’s Word on our own, so that we can grow.
h.
Grow in knowledge
of the Truth.
i.
The Truth of
Jesus that sets us free.
j.
Free from the
bondage of our sins.
27. Bible Based Teaching is part of our Foundation.
a.
Last week we
talked about Prayer.
b.
How we are to
pray dependently on our God.
c.
Praying for
things that only He can do.
d.
One such prayer
might be for God to work in the hearts of all believers around us.
e.
Ask God to open
their eyes if they are not being fed The Truth of God.
f.
Ask God to guide
people to Bible teaching churches.
g.
Pray for
preachers and teachers to toss aside those TED talks and feel-good messages.
h.
Instead to focus
on the God breathed Scriptures.
i.
Focus on the Word
that was given to rebuke, correct, and encourage.
j.
So that all who
hear, can learn the Truth and be freed from our sins.
28. This foundational element requires all of us to focus
on the Word of God.
a.
Requires men to
strive to correctly preach the Word of God.
b.
Each person who
teaches a class or Bible study to prepare and teach the Word.
c.
It requires all
of us to be in God’s Word so that we grow in knowledge and discernment.
29. Take a look at the reflection questions on the slide and
in your bulletin.
a.
Think about them.
b.
Pray on them.
c.
Act as the Holy
Spirit leads.
30. Pray that God teaches you His Word so that you can
teach others.
a.
It is a big
responsibility, but ultimately, we are all called to make disciples.
b.
We are all called
to teach in one form or another.
31. Pray for anyone standing in this pulpit, those who teach,
and others that while we are not perfect and we will make mistakes.
a.
But that our
focus will always be to teach God’s Word correctly.
32. We need Bible Based Teaching as a part of our
foundation.
33. I read earlier that Jesus is the way, the truth, and
the life.
a.
He is the only
one who can set us free from our sins.
b.
He is the Holy
God who died on the cross to pay our debt.
c.
He did this in
order to forgive any who turn to Him.
d.
If you would like
to know more about Jesus, I would love to talk to you.
e.
If you are ready
to give your life to Him, I am here to pray with you.
f.
The altar is open
for any and all prayer needs.
