Sermon Notes - Luke 24 - Resurrection Sunday 2025 - Littleby Baptist - April 20, 2025
1. Happy Resurrection Day!
a.
We will start in Luke 24.
2.
Between Good Friday and Today, Resurrection
Sunday would have been the Sabbath.
a.
For most of us, that meant we took care of all
those things we needed to do that we couldn’t do when we were at work.
b.
Went to the store, cleaned the house, mowed the
lawn, etc.…
c.
Maybe got to spend some time with family or
friends.
d.
Or spent some time preparing to spend time with
them today.
3.
In Jesus’ day, the Sabbath was a lot stricter.
a.
You stayed at home or very close to home.
b.
You could only travel 2/3rds of a mile without
breaking the sabbath.
c.
That is there and back, a total of 2/3rds of a
mile.
d.
Food preparation was to be done the day before
the Sabbath.
e.
Not even your servants were to prepare meals on
the Sabbath.
f.
It would be like us staying home on a snow day,
eating cereal, pre-made sandwiches, and cold pizza.
4.
For Peter, John, Andrew, Simon, James, Mary, and
others…
a.
This Sabbath was not a good day.
b.
It was a day to dwell on what just happened.
c.
A day of wondering if they could have said
something to change Jesus’ mind about coming to Jerusalem.
d.
They would remember the shouts of Joy during the
triumphant entry.
5.
Then wonder what event, what action of Jesus’
tipped the scales.
a.
Was it when He chased out the money changers?
b.
Was it when He asked the priests and scribes
about what they thought about John’s baptism, was it of God or from man?
6.
I would suspect they remembered the time they
had with Jesus that last week.
a.
Wondering if Jesus knew what was going to
happen.
b.
Thinking through everything Jesus taught them.
c.
Remembering the time in the Upper Room.
d.
When He broke the break saying it was His body.
e.
Or how the wine was like His blood being poured
out for them.
7.
At this point, the Holy Spirit was not on them.
a.
They did not understand it all.
8.
On this Sabbath, I would suspect the regrets
were hitting them.
a.
They were all asleep when the crowd showed up.
b.
Could they have helped Jesus escape if they were
awake?
c.
Peter was probably kicking himself for arguing
with Jesus about never denying Him.
d.
It happened exactly as Jesus said it would.
9.
I wonder if those who stood at the cross and
witnessed Jesus suffer, regretted it on that Sabbath day?
a.
The images they saw when they closed their eyes
likely haunted them.
b.
They were probably wondering why did He not save
Himself.
c.
Did they as His followers fail Him?
10.
That Sabbath before that first Resurrection day
was a rough one.
11.
There are times we can look at the events in our
lives and wonder what is going on.
a.
We may question if we made the wrong choice.
b.
Did we miss what God was doing.
c.
Should we have stepped out in faith and done
something else.
d.
Were we asleep at the wheel.
12.
Anxiety can get the best of us.
a.
Fear can make us question a lot of things.
b.
We can be heading down the wrong path.
c.
There are times when we are weak.
13.
But like that Sabbath after that Good Friday,
that is not where the story ends.
14.
Luke 24:1-8
a.
‘Why are you looking for the living among the
dead?’ ‘He is not here, but he has risen!’
b.
Their minds were set on the negative, on what
they had lost.
c.
They did not remember what Jesus had taught
them.
d.
They were stuck.
e.
Trapped.
f.
Fear was getting the better of them.
g.
Anxiety was keeping them from seeing the truth.
h.
They were lost.
15.
We see a bit more of the conversation in
Matthew.
16.
Matthew 28:5-6
a.
Do not be afraid.
b.
Do not let the anxiety stop you.
c.
Do not continue to be stuck, lost, or trapped in
what was.
d.
Jesus is alive.
e.
Yes He died.
f.
But it was not the end.
g.
It was a necessary stoep.
h.
A Critical step.
i.
But the story was not over.
17.
Jesus is the Risen Lord!
18.
One of the things Jesus’ resurrection tells us
is…
a.
We do not need to be afraid.
b.
No matter what we are dealing with.
c.
No matter the struggles we are facing.
d.
No matter how tough it gets.
e.
No matter the mountain we are facing.
f.
The medical challenge we are dealing with.
g.
The loss we suffer.
h.
It may be hard to swallow, but the truth is…
i.
No matter what happens on this side of Glory,
the best is yet to come.
j.
Yes, that is hard to hear at times, but it is true.
k.
If Jesus is your Lord.
l.
If you have given your life to Him.
m.
Our forever is better than we can ever
comprehend.
19.
Jesus defeated death.
a.
Our faith in Him, ties us to His resurrection.
b.
We are given that new life in Glory.

We do not need to be afraid of what happens in
the here and now.
d.
We can look past the anxiety, the fear, the
loss, the tears…
e.
We can look forward to forever in the presence
of our God.
f.
Where there will be no more pain.
g.
No sorrow and no tears.

Jesus defeated death when He rose from the dead.
a.
Giving us new life.
b.
Giving us Hope as we walk this earth.
c.
Giving us Hope for what is still yet to come.
23.
It is easy for us to feel like we have lost all
hope.
a.
To dwell on the things that are weighing us
down.
b.
That is like being stuck in life without Jesus.
c.
Without His sacrifice on the cross.
d.
Without Him being our Risen Lord.
24.
Our Hope comes from the Sacrifice.
a.
It comes from His Resurrection on that first Resurrection
Sunday.

earth and for all of Eternity.

a.
We are loved.
b.
Chosen.
c.
Forgiven.

a.
No matter what is going on in your life.
b.

eternity.
a.

b.
Because He loves you.
c.
His desire is to spend forever with you.
d.
All you have to do is confess your sins and
choose to follow Him.
e.
It is that simple.

If that is you this morning, I would love to
talk to you.
