Addicted to Technology???

I have been thinking about this post for some time now. I actually started it over a month ago, but have not been back on my laptop long enough to see it towards completion.

Technology is Great! Cell phones that allow us to talk to friends and family regardless of where they are. You even get free long distance on cell phones, that is a big plus being so far away from our loved ones.

Computers are another great result of the technological advances we have seen. I can do many things at work that would have been next to impossible 20-30 years ago. Not to mention they also help us to connect with love ones. A couple of weeks ago my Mother-In-Law was in town and they used Skype (a live video conference software) so the kids could talk to their Grandpa who is currently in Canada. It was a blessings for all!

Facebook can even be a good thing. I am closer to many of my cousins in PA that I never new that I ever could have been without it. Technology has allowed us to create a bond that never existed before.

While technology can be great, it can become overwhelming. One of the things I have said for years is that I needed some time to 'detox' from technology. Have not had much of that over the last couple of years. My work Black-Berry kept me connected to customers, suppliers, and co-workers 24/7. While the convenience of using it for email was great it never seemed to stop. It kept me working for more hours per day than I care to admit.

When I left my last employer I had a regular phone, no more black berry. I did not realize how addicted I had become until I realized I kept checking the phone for email, even though it could not receive them. Their were times, I checked it every few minutes.

I was addicted to Technology! I did not control the technology that I used, it controlled me.

After a few days, it passed.

When I started my new job and received a new data phone (Android) I started the habit of putting it in the bedroom when I get home and leaving it there. I might check it once or twice an evening, but I do not watch it all the time. As a result I do not even turn on my computer every night anymore. I have come to the realization that technology is great for all that it does; but I do not need it everyday.

I encourage each of you to look at how you use technology. Do you use it as a tool, or does it control you?

No matter what technology you use, make sure you take some time to disconnect now and again. You need a break!

God Bless,

Robert
